A narrow infill home layered into the urban fabric of Edinburgh

Compact - Sustainable - Family - Living
This compact urban home in Edinburgh reclaims a narrow 5-metre-wide plot formerly occupied by a disused garage and storage unit. Located within a dense residential neighbourhood, the project offers a sustainable alternative to suburban sprawl - retaining proximity to local schools, shops, and extended family, while transforming an underutilised site into a finely crafted family home.
The house is designed for a young couple with a small child and is arranged in section to make the most of the sloping terrain. Internal spaces are layered vertically, creating a sequence of living, working, and resting areas with varying degrees of privacy, daylight, and connection to the garden. A modest rear garden - once an overlooked strip - now provides room for planting, play, and everyday life.
Construction combines robust, tactile materials and rich tonality. The base of the house is defined by carefully detailed brickwork, grounding the building within its urban setting and expressing a sense of permanence. Above this, the upper levels are formed in a lightweight timber structure and clad in pigmented zinc, stepping back to create a refined vertical composition.
By focusing on urban infill, reuse, and low-impact materials, Lina-Strat House champions compact living, precise detailing, and a meaningful connection to place within the tight grain of Edinburgh’s city fabric.
